Frequently Asked Questions

Out at Bentley Ridge Tree Farm we get asked a lot of questions regarding plants, watering, and overall plant health. We have compiled a list of some of the most frequently asked questions and our best responses to these questions. I have never planted a tree before, do you think this is something I can handle?

    • Most of the time the answer is yes. Trees have many variables, but our planting guide can assist in answering most of the questions that arise when planting new plants.  

How much should I be watering my plants?

    • There are tons of variable factors that play into this question. Check out our watering guide to get detailed information on watering and plant water needs.

What do I need to haul a new tree home?

What is the root flare of a tree?

    • The root flare (or root collar) is the area at the base of a tree where the trunk transitions from trunk and bark tissues into root system tissues. Example Photo.

How should I store my tree if I cannot plant it right away?

    • Put it in the shade and keep the root ball moist.

Can I spray round up beneath my trees/ shrubs?

    • Yes. Just be sure the chemical does not drift onto the leaves. If you are spraying around perennials or small shrubs you can make a shield to protect them.

Do I have (whatever problem) with my tree?

    • At Bentley Ridge we are more than happy to take a look at specific problems with your plants, but some problems require on site evaluation from an arborist. You can find arborists near you here
